Live music in downtown Auckland

My Fiancee and I had the privilege of getting to film some street performers in downtown Auckland this last Friday night.

They go by the name of 'Stainless Heart and have a unique style to their sound. I loved the music they played as it was rather chilled and had a good grove going on, it was more of a jam session to listen to... chillaxed.....

The guitarist had a smooth flare to his style and the drummer was very resourceful with what she had.

We only stayed for around half an hour but we really enjoyed ourselves and it made our night.

Keep it up guys, awesome music !!

Awesome car

This car is awesome, I love the wheels on this thing, real down to earth and low!!

Its not my best photograph that I have taken, however I really like it for some reason. I guess I can see past the imperfections and maybe thats what I like about this photo... Sure a polariser would have been great to remove the reflections, The barrier tape could be removed.. and the car next to it on the right could have been re positioned out of the shot.... but what options do you have when you are at a car show!

I also had good fun post processing this in photoshop, I played with the split toning in camera raw and came out with this unique colour , at least unique to my images...

what drew me to this car was its stance, down in the grass... low and phat tyres...

Rolleiflex Mini Digital Camera * I want one *

These little beauties are called the
Rolleiflex MiniDigi AF5.0, it is essentially a mini Rolleiflex Digital camera, boasting a 5MP Sensor with a 4.9mm F2.8 lens weighing only 100 Grams!!

It comes in two colours, Black or the red one shown here...

What I like about this camera is the traditional waist level viewfinder, although it is digital, it still looks cool and professional.

This is a pretty awesome gadget for any photographer, it would make a perfect gift for the guy who has everything!! or if anyone wants to gift it to me ,,,, feel free to do so lol.

These were taken at Smashfest 09, At waikaraka park speedway, in Auckland , New Zealand.
It was a demolition derby, I didnt get to shoot the demo because it was too dark by that time.
However I did get to shoot this monster truck, they arent my best photograph but I love the energy in the first one and the man punching the air through the sunroof in the second image.

shots. You have some very stunning shots.

Orlando: Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.

Q: Can you tell us something about yourself, how did you start in photography and what do you love most about it?

A: I'm 24yrs old; I’m a full time Network Administrator in Salt Lake City, UT. I got started in photography not too long actually; it was Nov. 2007 when I got my first DSLR (Nikon D40). What I love most about photography is how challenging it is. It keeps me on my feet with being as innovative, creative and patient as possible.

Q: Focusing on the automotive side of things. How did you get started in this industry?

A: I started out photographing anything in general to just learn the basics. I've had a passion for vehicles since I was a kid, so this was an easy path to follow with photography. I then got in touch with pro-automotive photographer Josh Mackey (www.MackeyDesigns.com), who then mentored me and taught me pretty much everything I know, from photography essentials to photoshop skills.

Q: Who do you shoot for? Do you photograph for magazines, commercial or for car enthusiasts? Or all of the above?

A: I do freelance work, so anyone and/or company needed work. I’ve shot for magazines such as Import Tuner, companies such as ScoobyWorld, locals, local companies, etc.

Q: Did you learn on the job? What was the learning curve for you like?

A: I'm always learning something new, whether on the job or from reading. The learning curve never seems to come to an end really. I'm always learning new tricks, skills and best practices from other photographers such as Scott Dukes, Scott Chu, Clint Davis, Josh Mackey, Devin LeFevere and Jeff Creech, all which are awesome people and photographers.

Q: What equipment do you use? Are you a canon supporter or Nikon or something else?

A: I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II and a few "L" lenses mostly. Canon or Nikon? Both are amazing.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would like to share with anyone trying to get into automotive photography?

A: It can be a challenge. Like everything else, politics are involved and you better be able to handle very harsh critique and keep challenging yourself.

Q: Who is your most inspirational photographer?

A: Without a doubt Easton Chang

Q: Who is someone you would like to share with the world? A hidden gem or your favorite automotive photographer maybe?

A: Uhh.... not sure really lol.

My new toys!!

I recently aquired a large sheet of clear perspex and some black card to put underneath it to create a dark reflection... I will post the setup pics if anyone requests them or if i shoot them again... These were basicy lt up with a long exposure and a cheap $3 row of LEDS and some $2 LED finger lights...

The cameras were donated to me from my Uncle Bob,, THANKS BOB for the cool toys, lol I cant wait to put some film through them, it came with a 50mm F1.8 aswell! I really want to see the results from that.

This last image was taken with a long exposure and then I used my light to swoop over the top of the model car trying to create a smooth line above the car, the reflection was from the clear perspex sheet and a black card underneath it.. Good fun

The light was falling on this worker as he entered the building, i knew that the light inside the warehouse was dim and wouldnt show up in the photograph. I just had to photograph it.

One Tree Hill

Anyway I was driving around after training for the job and decided to go up one tree hill. Which there is no more tree anymore, it got cut down :(

I was walking around the edges of the hill and looked up and saw these clouds and just had to take a photo, I hope someone likes this one

Heres some more watersport photographs, Im really trying to improve my sport photography skills and learn more about difficult exposures. especially when the sun is hitting the water hard and the clouds are dark, talk about contrast. but what im mainly looking at is the exposure of the subject.

I want to be able to see their face, what they were wearing , their bord design etc. All of these photograps were shot on the same day, however the sun was setting and was always changing the way the light looked as it peeked out from behind the clouds.

The post production also has alot to do with the tone of the image, the colour temperature..
the Second image had quite a strong orange tone to it, but when I experimented with the temperature slider in camrea raw, I caught this colour and quite liked it.

These are the best photos from a set of about 500 shots, most are 2-3 seconds apart, I forgot my downloader so I had to change to JPG instead of raw when I realised my first card was already full.

I only have 2x 1Gig cards, Im looking at getting a 4 gig CF card sometime soon.

The kite surfer was very helpful in getting these shots... I didnt know him before but he would come and jump right in front of me and get real close.

All the others were too far out and barely filled the frame. Thanks mate

Removing reflections?

Just thought Id RE-post a picture ive been having a bit of trouble with in photoshop.
I have been trying to remove the reflections in the silver paint of this car to clean the image up.. I should have used a polarizer.... But o well, Does anyone have any ideas on how to clean up the paint, my problem is the gradient of the paint makes it difficult to clone out the reflections and make it look normal.

Teeny Tiny Projector - The worlds smallest projector

This is a Projector

This projector is the worlds smallest, least consuming projector...It is able to project an image of 70 Inches! with a 10Lm brightness.
And whats more it measures 24 x 28.6 x 7mm, and draws just 1.3W!!! Thats incredible.

Unused Army tunnels

These photos are taken at Devenport in Auckland, New Zealand.

The tunnels are pitch black in some places, and as usual I forgot to bring a torch... so all I had was my on camera focus assist beam, which gaqve me 3 or so bursts of light to see what was up ahead.

this man creates a world from nothing using some sort of computer software on attached to his wrist, the world is for a woman in one of his memories. He brings her to virtual life for a few minutes.. just to see her happy..

I found this some time ago while surfing the net looking for photographic gadgets and toys...

It is a fully functioning digital camera disguised as a cigarette lighter, with a resolution of 1280x960 Pixels ( cmos sensor 300k pixels)

Angle is everything

Angle is everything... This shot is not what most people would see as they pass by from class to class...
If you saw this from behind the stairs the scene looks rather flat and boring, I did not get a capture of this, however the photo below is what most people would see.

I love the reflections in the top shot, I made sure that the lies lined up to my liking and that I cropped out anything that was a distraction ( there was a sign to the right that kept on grabbing my attention ), Ideally I would like to re park the cars too, but that was out of my controll

Photographing Downtown Auckland

Alot of my photos that I take are when im driving around. I will see something that captures my attention... I have to stop and capture it...

This one was shot while driving around town trying to find a carpark in downtown Auckland. For anyone who has tried this its almost impossible, When I finally parked I looked back and thought WOW, I have to capture that..

I was lucky that my Fiancee put up with me getting out my camera and starting photographing the sunset through the city buildings. later she said that when I am in 'photography mode' there is no stopping me LOL. But she respects and understands my passion and is encouraging of it.. :-)
I am one lucky guy...

I was driving to a flower apointment to sort flowers for my wedding later this year, we had come from a vineyard already and I saw the door was open reveling the big metal cylinder. I asked my Fiancee if it was OK to stop and for me to take some photos... And this is what I got. I only stayed for about 10 mins but I am very pleased that I did...

Night Speed Drag wars

As you probably already know.. This is the photography that gets my blood pumping and excites me. The challenge of creating unique and new images within the genre of Motorsport.

I love to go out and come back with something that is unique and new.

Something that was taught to me while studying a Diploma in Contemporary Photography is when you go to a location the first thing you want to do is to get some location shots. These give you an idea of what the venue looks like, an overview. You want to get the 'safe shots' while there is no pressure to perform or to catch any action.
This is especially useful if you are doing photojournalism or documentary photography.
I have to be honest here.... I did not take any 'safe shots' on this location as it wasn't a priority for me. these were for personal use, just gaining experience and trying some new techniques.

What I loved about this shoot was it started around 6.00pm so I got to photograph the sunset, and then continue to photograph through the night... I had a great time and will definitely do the night speed drags again.

For the burnout photos I used an exposure of 1/40th to get the blur in the wheels but it was fast enough to hand hold without the use of a tripod ( I'm sure I didn't use a tripod for this shot ).

The racer on the bike was shot at 1/125th of a second, not as sharp as I would like but I liked the shot.

The pits is always an interesting place to get photographs of the behind the scenes.. At Meremere anyone can walk through the pits as they will, making sure not to get run over.

This calendar would be perfect on a photographers desk, or a very cool gift for the rich photographer who is impossible to buy gifts for.. anyway its a neat gadget but at $2000US its a bit out of my price range. one day I might buy one when I have the funds to do so... this camera lens coffee cup has been designed By a very cool designer called tebe_interesno Check out his work, he has some really cool design work on his site.
If I had a studio of my own and these were available to be purchased I would serve my clients in this as something to remember the experience by.
I have a 18-55mm lens that is broken...... hmmm.... I wonder how this could be made LOL.

I am looking for a roundabout to do a night long exposure from above on an angle, either from a walk over bridge or a car park building, or a apartment room ETC... basically I came up with this idea while looking at light trail images on Flickr , I have found an image which is kind of like what I wanted to do ( after much searching on the Internet ) http://www.flickr.com/photos/linselus/2044027261/sizes/o/target="_blank" If anyone can think of a location which would work for me I would be most appreciated

I love the way the car trails leave a smooth light behind, I want to go back to this location when it is busier so I can get the cars over all the motorways.

Light Painting Experiments

My Fiancee And I recently attended a free festival held in Downtown Auckland called the Lantern Festival.
Each year they celebrate the Chinese new year... Its also a great opportunity to photograph... As I did, But because I was out with my Fiancee I decided to limit my time behind the lens and spend time with Hannah ( my Fiancee) we had such a great time.

The photo above was shot at 2.5 seconds at F5.6 100 ISO, I turned the lens while clicking the shutter and zooming ( in or out I cant remember ) all at the same time. I liked the results as they were unpredictable and I always got excited to see the result of my own doings...

This image was the same concept, just showing how unpredictable how the exposures were, it all depends on how fast I rotated the camera, when I released the shutter, the aperture and shutter speed etc.. This photo is using the same settings as the one above ( 2.5 seconds at F5.6 100 ISO )

Automotive photography... My passion

I thought it would be good to show some of the photos that I have taken over the last two years or so....

First is a image shot at a car showroom on Great North Road in Auckland New Zealand.
This Dealership sells Bentley, Lamborghini and Aston Martin, They have never bothered me when I just walk around and photograph their cars.

The second image is taken at the same location. I would love to purchase a Canon Speedlite 580EX II and photograph in their showroom using a flash setup, because the light in the showroom is really something that I would like to take advantage of and have more controll over.
For now though I have no flash so I better start saving....

This Matte Black Audi looked really good in the photographs, but because of its location in the showroom I was left with a narrow field of view that I cold work with. I would love to photograph this car again.

Hello

First of all thank you for coming to look at my blog, stick around and have a look at some of my photos, let me know what you think of my work...

I am getting married to the most amazing girl in the world, her name is Hannah...and I love her to bits.... I will post more about her later on in my blog.

I am a up and coming photographer ( that's the way I like to think of it LOL ), specializing in motor sport, and starting to do some family portraits.
I absolutely love photographing cars, either racing or static. I also enjoy photographing v8 jet boats and kite surfing and the like.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand, and I am about an hours drive away from all the motor sport venues I could want, including drag racing, off road, jet sprint track, circut racing, and speedway.

Also I am surrounded by beaches, which is perfect for photographing water sport.

I have studied 1 year out of a two year 'Diploma in contemporary photography' at Unitec, But I had to quit my studies in the begining of the second year due to getting sick with Glandular Fever which took me a year to recover from.

Anyway that is enough about me for a while I think.
